MAKE PEACE PUBLIC SCULPTURES
Public Art, sculptures, promoting Peace?
In the United States alone there are over 185,000 war monuments. How many Peace monuments, less than 200. In Europe and the Far East, the balance still favors war. If a culture is defined by what it memorializes, then it is no wonder, that war as a first and only response dominates. Yet, no war has ever been won on a battlefield in all of human history, for on the day after “hostilities cease”, we face making peace, building peace or going to war once again.
Peace is not an abstract and methods for achieving it, do exist. One need look at the wisdom and commitment made by the “Marshall Plan” to rebuilding Germany and Japan after World War two. How many wars have these two countries been in since 1946, zero. The total cost in today’s U.S. dollars of the Marshall Plan was 120 billion dollars for more than fifty years without war, against the cost of the United States Iraq War, which cost five trillion dollars, 120,000 and more lives, eleven years, so far and now the world watches as Iraq, continues in violent civil strife. There are many why’s. the least is building an effective lasting peace?
This historical & cultural background forms the foundation for the Make Peace sculptures, and begs the question: “at what level do we begin to make peace an important choice and option, in our daily lives, our culture, our nation’s destinies, and the future of our planet?”
